Sabre Girls Hockey and Rocket Ice Arena played host to nearly 50 young ladies on Saturday, February 20 as part of Hockey Weekend Across America’s Try Hockey For Free Day. Through the support of USA Hockey, AHAI and the Sabre Hockey Association’s OneGoal program, as well as used equipment donations from the Chicago Mission’s 12U and 14U girls teams and Sabre Girls 19U team, each participant was able to experience hockey without the barrier of purchasing equipment. Rocket Ice Arena generously donated rental skates to those who needed them.
Bob Mancini, USA Hockey ADM Regional Manager, led the girls through a series of fun station-based games, skills and drills appropriate for each skater’s skill level. After an hour of on-ice fun, the Try Hockey girls were treated to a pizza party where girls chatted excitedly about their experience and parents could mingle and ask questions about “what comes next.” Every participant received a USA Hockey jersey and Sabre Girls Hockey drawstring bag to remember the day.
Sabre Girls Hockey would like to thank the following people for donating their time and talents to assist on the ice: USA Hockey’s Bob Mancini, Sabre 10U Coach, Keith Mellen, Sabre President, Jim Clare, Sabre Girls 19U team members – Anna Cockey, Carly Lang, Halley Wilhelm, Brianna Degen, Nicole Jajic and Lexi Peterson, New Trier Girls High School Coach, Carla Pentimone, Chicago Mission’s Dave Lobdell and his daughter, Lyndie (Mission Girls 14U), and the Learn-to-Play Hockey Coaches from Rocket Ice Arena.
